Lisbon's sweet treasure
in the heart of the city.
Making the delicious Pastel de Nata since 1829
The first recipe for Pastel de Nata from Confeitaria Nacional is part of the recipe book of the founder, Balthazar Castanheiro, and this is one of the oldest and most traditional recipes for Pastéis de Nata in Lisbon.
Today times are different but the experience of enjoying a good Pastel de Nata remains magical. Its simplicity and flavor make Pastel de Nata a unique cake that deserves devotion when you try it: first you have to observe it, then feel the crispy dough on your fingers and finally, take the first bite for the velvety cream to be revealed.
Tasting a good Pastel de Nata is undoubtedly an experience of the traditional Portuguese sweet flavors and there is nothing better than trying the most traditional and ancient recipe for Pastel de Nata in Lisbon at Confeitaria Nacional.
At Praça da Figueira you can have our Pastel de Nata with some coffee in one of our rooms or you can take away a box and enjoy them while being amazed by the Tagus River, about 10 minutes from Praça da Figueira. We promise you that this flavor will be part of your memories of Lisbon.
Our History
Our history is deeply linked to the history of Lisbon. Located in Praça da Figueira since its inauguration in 1829, Confeitaria Nacional is a landmark of tradition and quality in the city.
In 1873, thanks to our growing prestige among the people of Lisbon, we gained the status of supplier to the Portuguese royal house and are, still today, suppliers to the Presidency of the Republic.
In 1875 we introduced Bolo Rei in Portugal, which marks the beginning of this Christmas tradition that continues to this day. We are proud to keep the original recipe unchanged, which is known only to the current owner and our pastry chef.
At Confeitaria Nacional we preserve the oldest and most traditional recipes of Portuguese pastry. Our recipe for Pastel de Nata, considered by many to be the best Pastel de Nata in Lisbon, is also one of the oldest and most traditional in the city. The iconic Bolo de Arroz, one of the Portuguese’s favorite cakes, is also an ex-libris of our house.
