The façade and the interior decoration have kept the same Pombalina traces which honor the houses tradition and transports any visitor to the times of the founder Balthazar Roiz Castanheiro.
There are many details that leave no one indifferent:
– The corner where more than 185 years of history have been made;
– The luscious on the facade reminiscent of some of the major awards won throughout history;
– Inside the murals, mirrored ceiling, the detailed woodwork…
On the first floor we can find an exquisite tea room. It was in the second half of the nineteenth century that the son of the founder, Balthazar Castanheiro Junior inaugurated the 1st floor of Confeitaria Nacional with great success. However this floor was closed for many years until the current owner decided to reopen.
Confeitaria Nacional is a known for its tradition aswell as for its charme and symbolism. These three factors caught the attention of Portuguese filmmakers João Botelho and Manoel de Oliveira, who filmed several scenes for movies inside Confeitaria Nacional.
It is now considered municipal interest and part of the city’s history.
